A medieval-style stone castle perched above the Connecticut River in East Haddam, built by actor William Gillette in 1919. The grounds overlook the river and surrounding forests, stunning at sunrise and during fall foliage. The 184-acre state park has miles of trails plus views from the castle turrets. The Chester-Hadlyme ferry (one of the oldest in the country) runs nearby. Free to hike the grounds; small fee to tour inside.
